Jean Prouvé, Chaise "Tout Bois" (1950s)

Chaise “Tout Bois” – Jean Prouvé, circa 1950

This rare “Tout Bois” chair was crafted at the Atelier Jean Prouvé around 1950. Entirely made of oak wood, it features a solid frame with a seat and backrest in molded plywood. Prouvé originally developed this design in 1941 during World War II as an adaptation of his Chair No.4, replacing scarce metal with wood while preserving its architectural integrity and structural clarity.

This specific chair comes from the refectory of the Centre d’Études Nucléaires of the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in Saclay. While the original metal CEA plaque is missing, its location remains clearly marked on the wood, attesting to its provenance.

As with all of Prouvé’s work, the design reflects a perfect balance between function, form, and engineering logic—the thicker rear legs carry the structural load, while the front legs are more slender. The result is an honest, utilitarian, yet elegant chair. Notably, the seat has an old grafted repair, a testament to its long use and institutional history.

A rare collector’s piece, the “Tout Bois” remains a symbol of resilient design in a time of material scarcity.

Dimensions: H83 cm × W40 cm × D49 cm.

Chaise "Tout Bois" – Jean Prouvé
